Hosts Argentina easily beat Ghana 3-0 in the finals to continue their recent dominance
of the tournament.
A total of 24 teams participated in the tournament:
- 6 from UEFA - Germany, Finland, Holland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and France
- 4 from CAF - Ghana, Egypt, Ethiopia and Angola
- 4 from AFC - Iraq, Japan, China and Iran
- 4 from CONCACAF - Costa Rica, USA, Canada and Jamaica
- 4 from CONMEBOL - Brazil, Paraguay, Chile and Ecuador
- 1 from OFC - Australia
- and Argentina as the host nation
The competition had six groups of four teams each with sixteen qualifying for the
second round. The top two in each group and the four third-placed teams with the best
records qualified for the second round.
Host country for the 2003 World Youth Championship is the United Arab Emirates.
