Argentina won the trophy for a record fifth time.
24 teams participated in the tournament:
- 6 from the UEFA
European U19 Championship - Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, Ukraine,
Germany, Italy. Europe's qualifying tournament, UEFA U-19 Championship 2004,
took place in Switzerland from 13-24 July 2004.
- 4 from the CAF African Youth Championship
- Nigeria, Egypt, Benin, Morocco. The African Youth Championship took place
in Benin from 15 to 29 January 2005.
- 4 from AFC
U20 Championship 2002 - South Korea, China, Japan, Syria. The AFC Youth Championship took place in Malaysia between 25 September and 9 October 2004.
- 4 from the CONCACAF
U20 Youth Tournament - USA, Panama, Canada, Honduras. CONCACAF's two
qualification tournaments took place in Carson, California,12-16 January
2005 (USA, Panama) and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, 26-30 January 2005 (Canada,
Honduras).
- 4 from the CONMEBOL
South American U20 Championship - Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile. The
qualification tournament took place from 13 January to 6 February 2005 in
the cities of Pereira, Armenia and Manizales in Colombia.
- 1 from OFC
- Australia. The tournament was played in the Solomon Islands from 17-31
January 2005.

The competition had six groups of four teams each with sixteen qualifying for
the second round. The top two in each group and the four third-placed teams with
the best records qualified for the round of 16.
