2005 Champions - Argentina

Argentina won the trophy for a record fifth time.

24 teams participated in the tournament:

  • 6 from the UEFA European U19 Championship - Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, Ukraine, Germany, Italy. Europe's qualifying tournament, UEFA U-19 Championship 2004, took place in Switzerland from 13-24 July 2004.
  • 4 from the CAF African Youth Championship - Nigeria, Egypt, Benin, Morocco. The African Youth Championship took place in Benin from 15 to 29 January 2005.
  • 4 from AFC U20 Championship 2002  - South Korea, China, Japan, Syria. The AFC Youth Championship took place in Malaysia between 25 September and 9 October 2004.
  • 4 from the CONCACAF U20 Youth Tournament - USA, Panama, Canada, Honduras. CONCACAF's two qualification tournaments took place in Carson, California,12-16 January 2005 (USA, Panama) and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, 26-30 January 2005 (Canada, Honduras).
  • 4 from the CONMEBOL South American U20 Championship - Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile. The qualification tournament took place from 13 January to 6 February 2005 in the cities of Pereira, Armenia and Manizales in Colombia.
  • 1 from OFC - Australia. The tournament was played in the Solomon Islands from 17-31 January 2005.
  • and the Netherlands as the host nation

The competition had six groups of four teams each with sixteen qualifying for the second round. The top two in each group and the four third-placed teams with the best records qualified for the round of 16.
