2002 Champions: Brazil

Brazil  have won the world title for a record fifth time after beating three-time winners Germany 2-0 in the final - Ronaldo was scorer of both goals and has won the Golden Boot Award.

Turkey beat out co-hosts Korea for the third-place spot after each team had reached the semifinals for the first time ever.

In a tournament of upsets, holders France were knocked out of the tournament in the Group Rounds, along with pre-tournament favourites Argentina and No.5- ranked Portugal.

The outstanding African country was Senegal who, in their first ever World Cup, were eventually knocked out in the quarterfinals by Turkey via an extra-time golden goal.

The final draw for this 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan took place on 1 December 2001 in Busan, one of the ten Korean hosting cities, with the fixtures having been arranged in a meeting held in June earlier that year.

Seedings were determined on November 28 according to past World Cup placings and FIFA Rankings and were (in order): Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany and Spain. Korea, Japan (joint hosts) and holders France rounded up the remaining seeded teams.
