USA recaptured the gold medal they had lost 4 years ago to Norway after beating
Brazil 2-1 in extra time. A qualifying system was introduced for the first time by football's world governing body
FIFA to decide which African team would play at the Women's Olympic
football finals.
Nigeria's Super Falcons claimed the spot following
a 1-0 win (3-2 aggregate) over South Africa in Abuja on 30 March 2004.
In the two previous Olympic Games FIFA chose eight
countries to participate based on past performances at the Women's World
Cup.
The last two women's tournaments at the Olympics have been played
at full international level, unlike the men's which is competed at
U23 level. The Men's Tournament has four groups - A through D - with Groups E
through G comprising the Women's Tournament scheduled below.
