The newly-inaugurated African Women's Championship will be held every two years
and supersedes the African Women's Nations Cup which was purely a qualifying
tournament for the four-yearly FIFA Women's World Cup and saw only the winner,
Nigeria on both occasions, qualifying for the 1991 and 1995 Women's World Cups. The
1st African Women's Championship, hosted by Nigeria, qualified the two finalists
for the 1999 Women's World Cup in Atlanta. |
