The 1st African Women's Championship 1998

The newly-inaugurated African Women's Championship will be held every two years and supersedes the African Women's Nations Cup which was purely a qualifying tournament for the four-yearly FIFA Women's World Cup and saw only the winner, Nigeria on both occasions, qualifying for the 1991 and 1995 Women's World Cups.

The 1st African Women's Championship, hosted by Nigeria, qualified the two finalists for the 1999 Women's World Cup in Atlanta.

Nigeria, winner of Africa's last two World Cup qualifying competitions, was given a bye for the 1st round.

Namibia and Sierra Leone withdrew because of lack of money.

Madagascar and Kenya withdrew; replaced by Morocco.

Mozambique, South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, DR Congo and Cameroon join Nigeria in the final tournament.
