The 3rd African Women's Championship 2002

7 to 20 December 2002, Nigeria

2002/2000/1998 Champions - Nigeria

Nigeria beat Ghana 2-0 in this year's final after their most closely contested championship yet when they ended up second in the Group Rounds having registered their first ever loss in the history of the tournament (1-0 to Ghana).

Both teams represented Africa in the 2003 Women's World Cup held in China.

The African Women's Championship (aka the African Women's Nation Cup) has been won by Nigeria on each occasion since its inauguration in 1998 and is awarded the trophy for good with a new trophy designed for the next tournament.

Nigeria (as host) were given a bye to this year's finals and were joined by the 7 winners of the second round.
