Gordon Igesund
Former Ajax Cape Town coach Igesund was appointed
Sundowns head coach on October 3 2006, replacing joint-head coaches Argentinian Miguel Gamondi and former Bafana Bafana captain Neil
Tovey who had been rewarded for winning the 2005/06 league championship
with contracts for the 2006/07 season. The duo's appointment
was abruptly terminated despite achieving 5th place on the log with just
one loss. They had been appointed joint
caretaker coaches on 13 December 2005 after Argentinian
Angel Cappa’s employment was terminated by mutual consent.
Despite guiding Sundowns to 3rd in the 2004/05 season and 2nd in 2005/06
at the time of his termination, Cappa failed to win any major trophies
for the richly-assembled side since taking over from Paul Dolezar on
December 20 2004.
Cappa has an impressive track record of coaching some of the best teams
in the world including Barcelona and Real Madrid and was assistant to
Cesar Luis Menotti when Argentina participated in the 1982 World Cup
finals in Spain.
Gamondi has stood in for Cappa in the past when the head coach had
been suspended while Tovey has recently acquired the highest marks in a
Uefa coaching badge in Germany.
Gordon Igesund has won four PSL trophies with as
many clubs (Manning Rangers 1996/97, Orlando Pirates 2000/01, Santos
2001/02 and now Mamelodi Sundowns 2006/07).
