Middendorp, former head coach of top Ghanaian clubs Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, had been appointed Chiefs' head coach in the 2005/06 pre-season replacing Ted Dumitru who retired after winning back-to-back league titles for Amakhosi.
Middendorp started brilliantly with trophies in both 2006 ABSA and SAA Supa8 Cups only to fade away with a disappointing 3rd place finish in the 2006 league and a mid-point position in the 2007 league at the time of his dismissal.
Losing to Golden Arrows in the first round of the 2007 ABSA Cup and to bottom-of-the-table AmaZulu just a week later proved enough to convince club owner Kaizer Motaung that the German's time was up.
