Teams qualify for the Meridian Cup based on their performance in European and
African youth competitions from the previous season.
This biennial tournament features the best of U17 sides from Europe and
Africa, last held in Italy where Spain beat out Italy for top spot.
It is contested by U17 national teams: 4 from Africa and 4 from Europe and is
played alternately in a European and an African venue.
Players represent both continent and country with each nation playing only
teams from the other continent. Points gained were then added up to determine
the continental winner.
In addition to gold medals for all players from the winning continent there was the Meridian Cup for the best team, awards for the top team from each continent, the top scorer, the best goalkeeper and a Fair Play trophy.
