WINDHOEK (Aug 31, 1997 - 14:05 EDT) - Zambia won the first COSAFA Castle Cup after drawing 1-1 with Namibia on Sunday in their final group competition match in Windhoek.
Zambia finished with eight points in the five-nation tournament, organized by the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations, two ahead of the Namibians in second place. Mozambique finished third.
Namibia had to win the match to oust Zambia from the top slot in the standings but went a goal down when David Siame, playing only his second international, headed home after 32 minutes.
Siame, who plays for a club in China, picked up a rebound after Namibian goalkeeper Fillemon Kanalelo could only parry a shot from Frazier Kamwandi.
But local hope, with a record crowd of 15,000 watching at the Independence stadium, was restored two minutes after the start of the second half when Namibia won a penalty.
Robert Nauseb was fouled by Zambian defender Sidney Mambwe and Namibian captain Mohamed Ouseb converted.
The tension then seemed to oversaw both sides, who had few chances after that.
Zambia took home R400,000 in prize money. The cup is to become an annual event.
