The 6th Coca-Cola Cup 2001

12 September - 24 November

2001 Champion: Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs demolished Jomo Cosmos 5-0 to win their first ever Coca-Cola Cup.

Sponsors Coca-Cola have pledged R80-m over five years towards this League Cup competition following the withdrawal of tobacco giants Rothmans, sponsors of the Rothmans Cup.

This is by far the richest domestic competition on the African continent with the winner receiving R2m and the runner-up R1m.

Coca-Cola last sponsored this competition in 1996 when it was won 1-0 by Umtata Bucks (now Bush Bucks) over Qwa Qwa Stars (now Free State Stars) in a replay match after a 1-1 deadlock in the final.

Fresh draws were held for all rounds.

Competition procedures

The knockout competition is contested by the 18 PSL teams with the two promoted teams engaging the two teams that finished the lowest on the league table last year in the preliminary round.

The winners then join the 14 remaining teams from which the top eight teams, according to the positions they attained on the league table, are seeded in a draw that will pit them against those who finished lower.

The same principle applies in the quarterfinals, but the seeding system will not be used at the semifinal stage. After the draw, a mechanism, like tossing a coin, will be used to determine which team plays at home.

In the event of a draw, extra time will be added during which the golden goal rule will apply.

If there is still no winner at the end of 120 minutes, a penalty shootout will determine the team that progresses to the next round.

The same applies in the final where there will be no replays in the event of a draw.
