| Hearts of Oak beat Asante Kotoko on penalties in an
all-Ghanain final. The new Confederation Cup merges the
African Cup
Winners' Cup and the CAF Cup with the National Cup Winner
for each country automatically qualifying.
The 12 countries with the
best results in the clubs competitions in the previous five years are
also allowed to enter a second team, normally the third-placed
finisher in the national league championship. (The league runner-up
qualifies for the more lucrative Champions League).
For 2004 the 12 countries authorised to engage a second
club are: Algeria*, Angola, Cameroon, Côte
d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt*, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal,
South Africa and Tunisia.
*Algeria and Egypt entered just one team with the second only
eligible for the Arab Champions League. Both competitions, the Champions League and the Confederation Cup, start with a maximum of 64 teams. The eight teams who are knocked out from the
Last 16 stage of the Champions League are then integrated into the
Confederation Cup and play, in a direct elimination round after a drawing
of lots, against the last eight in the Confederation Cup. The
eight remaining teams are then divided into two groups of four with
the group winners going directly to the final.
All ties are played through two legs - home & away.
