The 1st CAF Champions League 1997

1997 Champions - Raja Casablanca (Morocco)

The premier club championship in Africa, commenced 1997, succeeding the African Cup of Champions Clubs (1964-96). Open to all CAF affiliated National League Champions, plus the defending champion club. Preliminary, First & Second Rounds, provide eight teams then divided into two, four team leagues. Winners of each mini league, play off the Final to decide the championship. Traditionally, North African clubs dominate at the highest level and since 1981, only Asante Kotoko (Ghana 1983) and Orlando Pirates (South Africa 1995), have broken the monopoly. All ties played through two legs - home & away.
