The 8th MTN CAF Champions League 2004

2004 Champions - Enyimba (Nigeria)

Nigerian champions Enyimba won their second consecutive Champions League Cup following nail-biting penalty wins in the knockout stages.

This is the premier club championship in Africa commenced in 1997, succeeding the African Cup of Champions Clubs (1964-96). It is open to all CAF-affiliated National League Champions and the Cup holder.

This year the competition was expanded to a maximum of 64 teams with 12 countries also entering the runner-up of their league championship. Previously, the league runner-up for all countries entered the CAF Cup competition which has now been merged with the African Cup Winners' Cup in the new Confederation Cup.

Selection of the 12 countries is based on those with the best results in the clubs competitions in the previous five years.

The last eight teams are divided into two groups with the group winners and runners-up qualifying for the semifinals.

The 8 teams who are knocked out from the Last 16 stage of the Champions League are then integrated into the Confederation Cup and play, in a direct elimination round after a drawing of lots, against the last eight in the Confederation Cup.

All ties are played through two legs - home & away.

MTN sponsored the tournament for the first time this year on a multi-year deal.
