This is the premier club championship in Africa commenced in 1997, succeeding the African Cup of Champions Clubs (1964-96). It is open to all CAF affiliated National League Champions and the Cup holder.
All ties are played through two legs - home & away.
The prize money has been increased to the amounts shown on the left. In addition, 5% of the amount received by each of the 8 clubs reaching the group rounds will be deducted for disbursement to the national association to which each club is affiliated.

The following Champions League Regulations Article 4 paragraph 7 relating has been modified as follows:
In case of equality of points after all the group matches have been played, the classification of the teams shall be established according to the following criteria:
- Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams
- Goal difference resulting from the matches between the concerned teams
- Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the concerned teams
- Superior goal difference from all the matches played in the group
- Greater number of goals scored in all the matches played in the group.
