The Amilcar Cabral Cup is open to the African Zone 2 countries (far West Africa) and is named in memory of the man who fought for the liberation of Cape Verde and Guinea from Portuguese colonial rule [link].
Originally an annual tournament, it has been held biennually since 1989 except for
2000 and 2003 when it was not held. The
2005
tournament is hosted by Guinea.
Senegal fielded an under-23 side as the senior team was
committed to a conflicting friendly on November 8 against South Korea while Sierra Leone pulled out citing lack of funds.

Group A - Mali (host - 25), Mauritania (44), Guinea-Bissau (47), Benin (40)
Group B - Senegal u-23 (N/A), Gambia (39), Cape Verde (holder - 41)
