The U20 African Championship is held every two years with the top 4
teams qualifying for the FIFA World Youth Championship
which will be hosted by the Netherlands in 2005. Canada will host the
2007 edition of the championship
Until 1989 the African representatives were determined purely on a qualifying basis
with no African title on the line. Since 1991 there has been a qualifying stage followed
by a final tournament played by 8 teams in a chosen country.
Host country Benin automatically qualifies for the final rounds.
Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Lesotho, Angola, Mali and Egypt
will join host, Benin, for the African Youth Championship finals from
January 15 - 29, 2005.
